Sumitomo Rubber Supports International Rubber Study Group Initiative to Ensure the Sustainability of Natural Rubber as a Resource

October 11, 2016

Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. is pleased to announce that, as part of our ongoing commitment to preserving the environment and fulfilling our various corporate social responsibilities (CSR), we have signed on to participate in the Sustainable Natural Rubber Initiative (SNR-i), which was established by the International Rubber Study Group (IRSG*1) with the aim of ensuring the sustainability of natural rubber as a resource.

The SNR-i is a project launched by the IRSG with the stated objective of establishing a sustainable global natural rubber economy that balances economic, environmental and societal needs throughout the entire natural rubber supply chain-from production to consumption. The initiative establishes guidelines for the following five aspects of the natural rubber supply chain while promoting continuous improvement among participating companies, who have each committed to abide by these guidelines through independent, voluntary activities.

1.Supporting Improvements of Productivity
2.Improving the Quality of Natural Rubber
3.Supporting the Forest and Woodland Sustainability
4.Water Usage Management
5.Respecting Basic Human Rights and Labor Rights

Tires-the Sumitomo Rubber Group's main line of business-are primarily composed of natural and synthetic rubber, with natural rubber accounting for approximately 30% (by weight)*2 of the total materials used to make a standard tire. As it is harvested from rubber trees, natural rubber can be considered an inherently sustainable resource; however, by declaring our support for the SNR-I, the Sumitomo Rubber Group has now committed itself to enacting measures to conform with the initiative's guidelines toward ensuring the sustainability of the entire natural rubber supply chain from production to consumption. Thus, we are now working to implement a natural rubber procurement system that achieves harmony with the environment and with society.

In order to remain a truly valuable presence for people, for communities and for society, the Sumitomo Rubber Group has established our Basic CSR Philosophy as one of the cornerstones of our overall business activities. We have also established guidelines concerning the procurement of raw materials and other items, through which we ask that our suppliers also follow our CSR Code of Conduct in their business activities as well. By pushing forward with these and other activities, we will continue to make improvements in terms of all of the areas covered by SNR-I guidelines.

Through our GENKI*3 activities to revitalize our communities, society and the global environment, the Sumitomo Rubber Group aims to contribute widely to the creation of a sustainable society as a reliable corporate group that earns and maintains society's trust.

*1The IRSG is an inter-governmental organization composed of public and private stakeholders on both the supply side and the consumption side of the natural/synthetic rubber industry.
*2According to the Japan Automobile Tyre Manufacturers Association's "Japanese Tire Industry 2016" Report
*3Based on the "CSR Guidelines" established in the Sumitomo Rubber Group's "CSR Basic Philosophy," GENKI stands for the five basic categories of our CSR activities: "Green Initiative" (tree planting), "Ecology" (reducing the environmental impact of our business activities), "NEXT" (developing next-generation technologies and products), "Kindness" (efforts to improve people's lives) and "Integrity" (honesty and reliability for all of our stakeholders). The word "genki" also means "energetic" in Japanese.
