Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. (SRI) is pleased to announce that we have developed a new tire sensing technology called "SENSING CORE," which is able to detect road conditions, tire load and other information by analyzing the wheel speed signals that are generated by the rotation of the tires.
SRI has already perfected our proprietary DWS (Deflation Warning System) technology, which analyzes wheel speed signals from the rotation of tires to detect and notify the driver of decreases in tire air pressure. Our DWS technology has been adopted by many automobile manufacturers and can now be found as a factory standard feature in countless vehicles throughout the world. Based on the technical knowhow that we cultivated in the development of DWS, our new "SENSING CORE" is the next evolution in DWS technology, an advancement that eliminates the need for an additional, dedicated sensors by instead utilizing cutting-edge software to detect tire pressure directly from existing wheel speed signals, thereby reducing the cost of installation and eliminating the need for maintenance.
As the only part of a vehicle that comes into direct contact with the road, tires must support a vehicle's entire weight. Our "SENSING CORE" technology uses a proprietary algorithm to detect various types of information based on what we know about each specific tire so that this information can be shared with the driver and with the vehicle itself. This advanced algorithm incorporates and takes full advantage of our extensive knowledge of various tire properties, which we have gained through over 100 years of experience in tire development.
Moreover, by analyzing and performing statistical processing of wheel speed signals, "SENSING CORE" is able to detect not only decreases in tire air pressure, but can also estimate road conditions (slipperiness), the load applied to each tire and other information in real time. And we can also look forward to further advancements to this technology in the future, including the ability to estimate tire damage and wear as well as the ability to collect and analyze data on the cloud for sharing this information with other vehicles.
Thus, we can say with confidence that "SENSING CORE" is a technology that not only contributes to greater safety for drivers and passengers, but will also play a role in the rapid advancement of autonomous vehicle technology in the near future. At SRI, we are committed to driving forward with the development of advanced technologies so that we may continue to contribute to the development of a safer and more environmentally friendly mobile society.
