Sumitomo Rubber Signs on to the UN Global Compact

Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. is pleased to announce that we have signed on to the “UN Global Compact (UNGC)” put forth by the United Nations and were officially added to the registry of participating companies on May 19, 2022.

One of the world’s largest sustainability initiatives, the UNGC aims to bring the United Nations, corporations and other organizations together for collaborative efforts to build a healthier global society. Companies and other organizations that have signed on to the UNGC are expected to engage in ongoing efforts to realize such a society, working under a Top Commitment that aligns with the Ten Principles of the UNGC, which concern the protection of human rights, the elimination of exploitative labour practices, the preservation of the natural environment and the prevention of corruption.

In light accelerating climate change and other major developments affecting the most pressing issues that our global society faces today, the Sumitomo Rubber Group came to the conclusion that a new policy, one based on long-term perspectives to foresee the world of 2050, would be essential to the sustained growth and development of both our group and society as a whole. And so, we formulated and unveiled our “Driving Our Future Challenge 2050*” in August of 2021. This Long-Term Sustainability Policy sets forth various targets relating to key themes in the fields of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) so that we may continue to make positive contributions to the realization of a more sustainable and prosperous society for all.

Through our “Driving Our Future Challenge 2050,” we will put the Ten Principles of the UNGC (concerning Human Rights, Labour, the Environment and Anti-Corruption) into practice throughout our business activities in order to contribute to the solution of various social issues toward the ultimate realization of a sustainable society.

The Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact
<Human Rights>
Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
<Labour>

Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; and
Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
<Environment>
Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
<Anti-Corruption>
Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
